RICHARD TAYLOR Statement

Artist Statement

My work is a distillation of life experiences, often seen through the influences of music and poetry. I allow the cadences, rhythms and syncopations of the musical and the poetic to resonate within and inform the spirits of my pieces.

Sometimes found objects from walks serve as metaphors for the experiences and wisdom we accumulate walking through life. I use their shapes in metal and in paint to echo their continued callings to us as they are then found in new circumstances.

Certain works are between painting and sculpture. The painted wall sculptures and painted standing sculptures fall into this category. Time plays a very essential part in these works as they are not so much about the details of the past as they are about the essence of remaining memories.

The painted wall sculptures address remnants of my emotions connected with specific places in the past. The memory of sitting in a station wagon back seat as a child, witnessing the light falling on a clapboard building in the south; the heat of the desert air as I passed through it to buy bread at a desert bakery.

Painted standing sculptures recall those people in my life who have shaped my character and sculpted my being through their actions, examples and spirits. They are my sentinels, my guideposts in my walk through life.
