MELLIE LONNEMANN

MELLIE LONNEMANN Biography

Mellie Lonnemann began her ceramic pursuit in Faenza, Italy at the Ballardini State Institute of Art where she studied for two years. After Italy, she moved to NY to complete her BFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University with a concentration in ceramics and a minor in dance. Her figurative sculpture acts as a bridge between her interest in clay and movement. The bodies’ ability to express gesture, emotion and narration inspires her figurative sculpture. Drawing on memory and life experiences, Mellie creates expressive moments of transition and self-awareness through her art.

MELLIE LONNEMANN Statement

re·flec·tion \ri-'flek-sh?n\
1. the throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it
2. serious thought or consideration

As one walks near a body of water, they are struck by the reflection of their surroundings: A moment to ponder what visibly surrounds them in a new light, from a different perspective. In the creation of the "Reflection" series, the figures capture that moment when one takes time for deepening their connection. The connection may be a still moment in nature... a setting sun or rising moon. The connection may occur from visiting the depths of their inner world. It's the moment of quiet and stillness that stands timeless. I've drawn on my personal experiences of heartache, contemplation, and peace. The figure has the capacity to express through gesture these inner moments.
