KRISTIN GUDJONSDOTTIR

KRISTIN GUDJONSDOTTIR Biography

Born in Reykjavik, Iceland, Kristin Gudjonsdottir (b. 1966 – d. 4/21/2007) came to California in 1991 as a transfer student to finish her undergraduate degree in sculpture. She received a BFA degree in sculpture and glass in 1995 from the California College of Arts and Crafts. In 1996, she was funded with a six month grant from the Icelandic government.

Inspired by nature and tools used by farmers and fishermen through the centuries, Gudjonsdottir used mostly found and recycled materials in her work. Her attention to discarded items and forgotten tradition allowed her to investigate the growing gap between her generation and that of her parents and grandparents, particularly with regard to being an Icelander. Gudonsdottir exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Iceland, California, Washington, Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Her work can be found in the city museum of Iceland, the Maritime School of Reykjavik, and many private collections both in the United States and Iceland.
